“ I'm giving this place a 4 star out of hope that they can be restored to their former glory. This was my favorite restaurant on the Hilo side of the island and now I have to voice my opinion over reoccurring issues plaguing the business since my return to the island. 1) Pro: the portions 1) Con: consistency The dollar value on each dish is well placed based on the volume of food you get but what is the true worth when the consistency is just not there. I went three days in a row and got the best pad Thai ever then the next day the absolute worst like no sauce at all zero flavor completely inedible, then I decided to go the third time because I couldn't believe it was really that bad certainly it was just a bad day someone forgot to add the sauce I hoped... unfortunately I got the dish and it was just as bad as the last time too salty and no sauce again. Even the papaya salad that they never mess up was laden with too much lime rinds making the dish bitter. Maybe covid has forced them to start over with their chefs but I would definitely say this is their biggest issue as how can I recommend such an amazing place if the wrong chef is there and makes my opinion absolute. 2) Pro: islands best tapioca pudding 2) Con: does not sell tapioca pudding They only give them out for guests which feels like a misstep and with their consistency problems I was hesitant on mentioning how great their desert is. I only review so I can inspire the places I love to get better so hopefully when covid is over and we can eat inside maybe Spoonful Cafe can take pride in being one of the few pleasant indoor free wifi restaurants in Puna and go back to what made them a local favorite. ”

“ It used to be cheaper when it was called Spoonful Cafe. They changed their name and now the food is a lot more expensive. It is good though. The Mongolian beef is really good, it's just hard to justify $16 for a plate. The price of everything is going up, but I think $16 is just a little too much. Maybe $13 and I'd totally give this place a 5/5. ”

“ A must stop when visiting Hilo town! I always order the vegetable cocoanut curry and the pad Thai noodles. Me and my family would always order family style because it can feed all 8 of us. My husband loves the garlic chicken so that is also a must on our take outs. I knocked off a start because you sometimes get a host who is not having a great day. Therefore you do not receive the best service. Other times when it is the owners they are super sweet and helpful. Pricing is a big high so we usually just eat here once during our 2 week visit to Keeau. ”

“ NOT GLUTEN FREE. I can't honestly review Spoonful Cafe as I was advised that nothing on the menu can be prepared gluten free when I called to order. However, since Google and Yelp both have Spoonful at the top of their results for GF dining, I am sharing my experience for other people who need to eat gluten free. It's not the cafe's fault that search engines say they have GF options so I didn't want to unfairly hit them with a low rating even though I have no idea whether or not the food is good. They do state at the top of the website that diners should declare their allergies before ordering. Unfortunately, it's so they can prevent people from unintentionally glutening themselves. ”
